LORD’S DAY

In years past America seemed to believe that Sunday was a very special time. Businesses closed and people ceased to labor but over the years things have really changed. For some people Sunday is a day to hunt, fish, golf, visit and just do something to enjoy self. In England there is a group called “The Lord’s Day Observance Society.” This organization would like to restore some “sacredness” to the Lord’s Day, Sunday. The “Society” recommends the following:

PLEASE READ

  • Relaxation should be a part of the Lord’s Day. The body needs rest physically, mentally and spiritually. The whole being of man can be refreshed after a week of toil and anxiety. It is believed that when Sunday is spent like any other day then much good is lost. People whose Sundays have been misspent, begin a new week tired and irritable.
  • Re-adjustment should be a part of the Lord’s Day. The Psalmist in Psalm 73, speaks of things that were too painful for him until he went into the “house of God,” then he understood their purpose.
  • Rejoicing should be a part of the Lord’s Day. Christ was raised on the First Day of the Week. We should go to the assembly of worship with the attitude of gladness as expressed in Psalm 122:1.

  • Reunion should be a part of the Lord’s Day. There is wonderful fellowship in the church family. People come from different parts as we assemble for worship. Always try to be in your place because it is to some degree a “family reunion.”
  • Reverence should be a part of the Lord’s Day. Study the Old Testament because there was reverence for sacred and holy things. There are sacred and holy things in the assembly and worship of God’s people today. We need to know how to “act in the house of God.”
  • Re-dedication should be a part of the Lord’s Day. The Bible speaks of our “examining ourselves” and this can be done at anytime but especially it needs to be done as we come together as a church family.
  • Re-assurance should be a part of the Lord’s Day. We need to know we are saved. We need to have our faith strengthened. We need edification. The Lord’s Day assembly can do this. The Bible says, “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord…”

LIFE

In my closing thoughts I ask, “What is really important in life to you?” Test yourself. Write down the ten most important things to you. What are they? I am amazed when young couples get married and say they want a good marriage and then leave the Lord, the church and spiritual things out of their lives. Nobody can improve on the words of Matthew 6:33. Be in your place of worship on the Lord’s Day. Come with a Bible in your hand, a smile on your face and a spring in your step. I’ll look for you in your place.
